In Chapter two of Religious Autobiography Comstock talks about the seven elements of religion. He describes religion as “part of some people’s lives which involves rituals, beliefs, organizations, ethnic values, historical traditions, and personal habits and choices some of which refer to the transcendent.” Comstock explains how different theorist divide the religion differently according to subject. Despite all the different ways to divide religion Comstock had seven which are cultus, creed, uncanny, community, code, course and character. Cultus or Ritual means in broad terms “according to religious laws or social custom” ( Websters online) . Comstock describes rituals being the “most visible of religions” this is because every religion has its own rituals. One can visually see the activities being performed whether it’s the clothing people where, the foods they eat, or they way they pray. Comstock also describes ritual as being “both temporal and spatial events.” By temporal he means that rituals occur regularly in times. Take for instant the Hindu Arti, this ritual occurs at 7pm everyday. When Comstock says “spatial” he means the rituals place. They occur in known places such as temples, churches, religious schools etc. In the book Longing For Darkness: Tara and the Black Madonna by China Galland there were many examples of “cultus or ritual “ throughout the book. One example is when she gets back from Nepal, Chos Kyi Nyima taught her meditation . She brought it back with her when she got back to California. She visualized being back there in the monastery. She pictured herself doing mediation on Tara. Another example is on page 190 when she wants to see the Black Madonna, Josef is suppose to take her so she can take pictures. “The Madonna is only visible three times a day for a half and hour at a time. This is something that happens everyday. Comstock’s next describes Creed or Belief. In class we talked about it being a conviction of what do I believe about and what is true.
