Anderson uses Triage to explore the issues of life and death in war, and the impact on those who survive. Those who survive are irrevocably harmed often as a result of the death of others. He uses the characters in Triage to explore the randomness of death in war, whilst depicting the guilt of the survivor. Mark suffered a terrible breakdown because of his experiences as a war photographer. He witnessed many deaths, including his best friend Colin’s. Mark’s mental condition was determined as “guilt of the survivor” and left him with permanent pain. The outstanding guilt he carries effected him greatly and his relationship with Elena. Mark’s occupation as a war photographer included earning money from the images he took of others suffering and in pain which accompanied his trauma. Joaquin Morales, like Talzani both have been involved in death and survival possessing the same guilt and shame of their actions.
