An experience that helped shape my character was when I sailed the treacherous Columbia River in a thirty foot sailing vessel. I visit my aunt and uncle every year for a two week vacation so we can sail along the river. We were preparing for the yachting races which happen every two years. Our destination was a small town near Longbeach, Washington, and to get to this town we had to come dangerously close to what is known as the Columbia Bar. The bar, also known as the “Ship Graveyard,” is an area of the river that gets dangerously shallow unless you know where you are going. The area is known worldwide for its rough and wild waters. My uncle and I realized the waters were going to be dreadfully violent when we spotted the dark clouds in the distance.
