The Mexicans and Africans were two groups that shared a lot in common in the middle to late 19th century, even though they were thought of as two low status groups. ... This treaty permitted the Mexicans to either remain in the US or move across the newly created border. ... However, when the Americans started west as word of “gold fever” swept through the countryside, Mexicans were just as eager to be a part of the riches as they were. The Americans, being aware of this, found their opportunity to divide, conquer, and then exploit the ignorant. The Mexicans were pushed into America because of the many political quarrels and unfair laws of their home country. ... to be slaves unless they were forced out of their country, just like the Mexicans wouldn’t have immediately come if they had not been forced out.

This racial discrimination came from the stereotypes Americans had towards all ethnic groups except for their own. ... Later on after the civil war, both Mexicans and Blacks were given more liberties with their jobs and contracts.
