The story's plot is quickly told and seems almost insignificant: a young woman's family comes over to her apartment for Thanksgiving dinner and meets her new lover. The protagonist Renata herself acknowledges the mundanity of this situation in the story: "All over the country, I tell myself, women are towing new lovers home to meet their families" (242). Such a story, one might think, offers mainstream America for our examination. One might even be disappointed; from an Asian writer, we encounter a family of Americans. Renata is not an immigrant, nor is her father; although proud of his North Italian heritage, he is the son of a man who was "a fifteen-week old fetus when his mother planted her feet on Ellis Island" (238).
