The refrigerator snickered as Sara spread a large piece of cream cheese on the bottom half of the bagel, “go ahead and laugh Mr. Smaty-pants.” Requiem for a dream portrays a widowed older mother who lives a secluded life from real world and buries herself into television. From the opening scene of the movie you can get a feel of her lonely, apathetic, and depressed life and a sense of her obsession with television. Her real problem begins when she receives a phone call and learns about an opportunity that she has won a chance to be on a television show. Thrilled by this opportunity she becomes obsessed with this show. Realizing that she is a little overweight she decides to go on a diet that would ultimately be her downfall. Sara Goldfarb decided that an ordinary diet would not be sufficient enough for her when she begins to have delusions and dreams of food, so she then calls a friend whom she had heard about to refer a doctor who prescribes medications to lose weight. The pills he prescribes are amphetamines or methylphenidate. These pills literally drive Sara crazy. In simply observing her you see that falls into the clinical diagnosis of amphetamine intoxication. Her maladaptive behavior including her hyperactivity and restlessness is significantly noticeable. Her rampant excursions through out her apartment indicate that she is clearly “losing it.” Sara’s son is concerned with her when he finds out that she is on these diet pills. He tells her that she would become addicted and a “Doper” if she were to stay on these medications. Sara’s reply to his comments was that the doctor prescribed her the medication and that that everything is okay. She questions him by saying how would he no more about the medication than a doctor. Harry’s concern for his mother is blinded by her happiness to losing weight, and by being loved by everyone else.
