1984 The main theme of the novel 1984 written by George Orwell is the dangers a totalitarian or communist government can impose on society as a whole. In the novel Orwell portrays the ultimate government that can control every aspect on life based on the total control of the technology and information flow, this government discourages individuality and free thought causing its citizens to become emotionally hollow and numb. The protagonist of the novel Winston Smith, a timidly rebellious member of the party sets out to change power balance of the party, but as he progresses he learns the length of control the party has gained from the techniques it has used to repress its citizens. Therefore the other themes in the novel directly revert to the main theme of the danger of totalitarian government and the effect it has on people.
