John Foxe and the Joy of Suffering—
The Drama and Spectacle of Protestant Martyrdom
The Protestant martyrdom under “Bloody” Mary has caused many different views and spectacles over the years. According to John Foxe the Protestant martyrdom in Catholic England was not about the way Christians have portrayed it to be. Instead of focusing on martyrdom as the separation of the body and soul as a supernatural process, he focuses on the humanly characteristics of martyrdom. Foxe shows the drama of martyrdom by describing it as a spiritual victory over those who had power and authority.
