Language Barriers in Puerto Rico

... , there are language barriers that you are going to run into in Puerto Rico. These barriers are often nothing more than guidelines, but following them shows a level of respect that is appropriate for visitors. For starters, the national language in Puerto Rico is Spanish. Although most people are fluent in English or know it very well, a level of respect is shown when foreigners, especially from America, attempt to speak their language. Puerto Ricans appreciate the attempts made by Americans to speak Spanish and often do not require that you continue in Spanish, letting you know that they speak English well. This rule of thumb applies to most situations that travelers will run into while in Puerto Rico.
