Response to Hermaphrodites with Attitude
Upon reading this selection, I was overwhelmed with information as well as the views and strong emotions of the author. One of the questions that came to me while reading this was: who is granted authority over deciding which gender to assign these intersex infants; why should doctors get to choose before the parents of the child? There was a section in the reading which states “the team examines the infant and chooses either male or female as a ‘sex of assignment,; then informs the parents that this is the child’s ‘true sex.’” But what I can’t understand is how or why these people, this team, should have the right to decide such a monumental question: girl or boy?
