According to the UNHCR (United Nations High Commission for Refugees), as of January 2000 there were 22.7 million refugees, in over 140 countries. ... As shown in my survey as the majority of individuals believe that the International Community is not doing enough for refugees. ... When this was happening the International world did very little, more specifically European countries, and American’s, whom did not treat the refugees that they accepted, properly. ... ” To say Canada does not do anything for refugees would be a lie. To say that our refugee system has to be looked at or that Canada does not do enough for refugees considering the caliber of our country, would be appropriate. ... According to my survey and readings, most Canadians think that Canada does more than enough for refugees. According to highly respected organizations like the United Nations High Commission for Refugees, Canada is doing many things wrong. ... In comparison with other countries for their population, Canada lets in the most refugees. Where the problem lies is after they are accepted, Refugees are ill-treated. ... The review board, where many applicants to Canada are rejected and because of Canada’s lack of appeal for refugees they usually cannot find out why they were accepted and try to reverse the original decision. ... Many refugees have no money when coming to Canada, so how would you expect them to pay it off? ... Many refugees when arriving from their foreign countries do not know how to speak English or French well, and these are the two languages the applications are available in. ... There was also a big outrage by the public when a boat full of Chinese immigrants were dropped off the west coast, claiming to be refugees.
