Some people have heard of Crohn’s disease, but most have not. To me, it is not just another disease. ...
Crohns disease is a chronic inflammatory disease of the intestines. ...
The disease is found in equal frequency in men and women and usually affects young patients in their teens or early twenties. The disease tends to be more common in relatives of patients with Crohns disease.
The diagnosis of Crohns disease is based on clinical signs, x-rays, and endoscopy. The disease is easily confused with ulcerative colitis, which is also an inflammatory bowel disease affecting the colon and rectum. Once the disease begins, it tends to be a chronic, recurrent condition with periods of remission and reoccurrence.
The cause of Crohns disease is unknown. Currently, Crohns disease is believed to be related to abnormalities in the response of the bodys immune system to the bowel contents.
