Russle Bank’s short story “Black Man and White Woman in Dark Green Row Boat” is on the surface, a story about a relationship that tragically ends due to the difference of opinions a couple have on the subject of an abortion for a baby they made. The underlying theme Banks conveys in this story however is that of a social barrier men have with women over decision’s concerning pregnancy, and abortion. ... The meaning of this place is a representation of society and the impact it has over the main characters. ... A (mother’s are in charge attitude) is a result of communal acceptance bred in this culture, or any culture for that matter. ... Mother’s coming with me. ... There is no question that a woman must carry the burden of a child through a pregnancy; however, this story is a testimony to how the feelings of the father are unimportant to the situation. ... The trailer park’s residents in the story watch silently as the man leaves by himself as this girl goes back to live her mother.
