Sargeant and Samson
Have you even encountered difficulties because you could not get the help from others due to the racial prejudice? ... In the Langston Hughes’s story, the main character, Sargeant, a black man experienced the plight “in one early evening” of snow season “during the depression. ... The church which Sargeant tried to get help from closed the door to him because he is black. ... Compare to Samson, who tried his best to fight back to the enemies, finally Samson later won even though he was in worse conditions because he was blinded and captured by the enemies. The black community should learn from Samson who lost his power and was alone in the blind condition because he still fought back by getting strength from the God. ... Sargeant, he is a lower-class homeless blackman. ... Compared to Samson, he is blinded and captured by enemies, but he still holds a hope to get freedom. ... ” (Line 79) Furthermore, Christ is “happy”(Line 80) to get off the cross for Sargeant’s motivations. Throughout Christ positive attitude towards Sargeant, Sargeant thought of himself as “ a hell of a fellow.” (Line 83) For Samson, he could beat enemies by pulling down the temple because “[he] prays to have strength.
