In practicality, one would not want to test the depth of a stream with both feet. It would not make much sense to use both feet, as one would get both feet wet. Another reason not to test the depth of a stream with both feet is because it could take you away in it; you would be standing in a stream of water that is possibly strong enough carry you to it’s end. That is why you want to test the depth of a stream with just only one foot. Oedipus in Oedipus isn’t following the general rule. His pursuit to find the king’s killer himself is an example of him putting both his feet into a deep, raging river rather than a stream, and if he’s not careful, it could take him down river and through some rapids.
