This story by Japanese author Yukio Mishima, who committed suicide, depicts the life of a young officer and his wife. Both committed suicide, the young man because he couldn’t fight his own friends, and his wife, because it was tradition for a soldier’s wife to kill herself the day her husband died. Yukio Mishima, whose real name was Kimitaka Hiraoka, was probably the most important Japanese novelist of the 20th century. During the World War II, Mishima was excused from the front, but he worked in a factory. He felt the rest of his life that he had survived shamefully and others had died honorably giving their lives for their country and emperor.
