CYBERCRIME SHOULD CHANGES BE MADE IN THE LAW TO INCREASE INTERNET SECURITY AND FIND AND PUNISH

During the past decade many countries have been very reliant on the Internet and its resources. The Internet, as defined by Hutchinson and Sawyer (1994:E4. ... ’ The Internet, since its invention, is seen as a potentially powerful tool that has been and is being used to advance economic and human development. However, the power that the internet possesses gives way to an increase in violations of law by criminals. This violation of law carried out via the internet is known as Cybercrime. Cybercrime includes illegal data interception, data interference, system interference and illegal access to personal data. Although cybercrime is regarded as an offense, there are no current laws which are strong enough to protect the privacy of internet users. There is also a lack of justice to the victims of cybercrime. The fact that there are very weak laws supporting the sentencing of cybercriminals is one reason why new laws should be made for internet usage. Another reason is that lack of trust and security (in the computer/internet-reliant world) can jeopardize development. Lastly, the internet is being used for illegal activities such as child pornography because of the lack of internet laws. These are some reasons why tougher laws should be enforced to increase internet security, and find and punish cybercriminals.
