The rising kingship of David resulted in many people devoting their complete respect for his actions and requests. It was assured that he would be protected and “bound in the bundle of the living in the care of the Lord your God.” (I Sam. 25.29) if anyone were to disregard David’s wishes or threaten his existence. One demand that was overlooked during David’s early reign was when Nabal, a wealthy Calebite, refused to give David’s men any of his goods. In the past, David had done no harm to Nabal’s servants while they were among him and his people, and he was sure that “they missed nothing all the time they were in Carmel” (I. Sam. 25.7). Due to this, David called upon Nabal to ask for some of his goods in order to have an adequate amount of food and sacrifices for their feast that they were going to have. Nabal refused to take part in the request, and once David heard of this, he prepared to fight and kill off all males in Nabal’s house.
