Cynthia Chan September 23, 2004 Period 2 Scarlet Letter: Chapter 4 Paragraph 1: This paragraph demonstrates romanticism. Babies are innocent beings that cannot comprehend the things around them. In this paragraph; the baby is able to feel the moral agony of Hester Prynne through nourishment. This seems to be a hint of the baby being something that the reader does not expect. The baby is larger than life, and seems to have the ability to survive the consequences from the sin of the mother. Paragraph 2: In this paragraph, the stranger is given the name Roger Chillingworth. It is interesting how the book almost hints that this man is Prynne’s husband and the names do not have the same last name. Maybe the husband changed his name so no one will suspect his identity. His name Chillingworth suggests a devoid of human warmth. When the man enters; Prynne becomes so still as if she is paralyzed with pain or fear of something. The stranger Chillingworth seems to have a huge effect on her, but not as huge of an effect on the baby. The baby continues to moan, which may show that the baby is enduring more pain than the mother is.
