Listening Self-Analysis On Tuesday, September 14, 2004, I had many communication encounters throughout the day. In this 24-hour period, my listening situations varied between face-to-face conversations to listening to class lectures. However, the listening situation I focused on was a face-to-face conversation between my friend and me. At around noon, I was having a pretty good conversation with one of my older friends. Since this conversation mainly consisted of him giving me advice, I definitely was engaged in a lot of active and critical listening. My mind selected, organized, and interpreted most of the things he said to me. It was also critically thinking of whether his advice was good or not. As far as empathic listening, I really did not engaged in this type of listening since I knew him pretty well. In short, my listening skills in this face-to-face listening situation had their strong and weak traits. An action plan for improving my listening skills was also derived and applied after this encounter to improve future face-to-face listening situations. My listening skills in this face-to-face listening situation had their strengths. First of all, my listening skills consisted of lots of eye contact. My eyes were pretty much focused on his eyes. I seldomly allowed my eyes to wonder off into the room we were in. This strength allowed me to understand everything he said. Secondly, my listening skills also consisted of a lot of head nodding.
