The first chapter of King’s Why Can’t we Wait, titled “The Negro Revolution” is a depiction of just that. He describes America the way it was in that time as a place of turmoil and discrimination. Although slavery and most of the crimes against African Americans had receded since Lincoln’s administration, there was still a lot of hatred and mistreatment towards those of color. King points out that it was then time for the African Americans to take a stand. The nation’s third revolution was well on its way. At first, there were only a few cries. The revolution was off to a slow start. But as others saw, they also followed. Saying “The storm clouds did not release a gentle rain from heaven, but a whirlwind, which has not yet spent its force or attained its full momentum” King points out how Negro voice was a powerful, but for now disrespected one.
