“You make me feel like a natural woman”
Perspectives on Sex, Gender and Identity
Aristotle once said, “The female is a female by virtue of a certain lack of qualities. ... Simone de Beauvoir argued that sex only refers to physiological differences between men and women. The concept of sex represents only mere facticity, or, as Sartre would say; the body in itself. The concept of gender, however, is a matter of transcendence, or one’s striving for itself. Essentially, one’s sex is a question of fact, while one’s gender is a question of choice. ... ” This idea of becoming insinuates that one cannot just be a gender, but instead takes part in a constant transformation. ... ” However, if Beauvoir were to discuss sex and gender via Plato’s theory of forms, she might describe sex as an accidental property, one which does not necessarily identify or define a thing, but rather happens to have a universal quality that may be shared with other things.
