In his essay “Coming to Terms with Language,” Malcolm X writes about how the white man is responsible for the black mans condition in America, which adds to his frustrations with not being able to communicate with people in the higher society in which he lived. In her essay “I know why the caged bird sings,” Maya Angelou expresses how she deals with racism when her white employer changes her name without permission and makes her feel as if she were a slave. Angelou also expresses on the idea of how much control comes with the power to name.
In both of these essays Malcolm and Angelou express their frustration on the racism they face. Malcolm became frustrated during the years he stayed in Norfolk Prison Colony. Malcolm saw himself as a person that would take action “I’ve never been one for inaction. ... ” With nothing to do in the prison, Malcolm soon began writing to people such as “the hustling world, and several dope peddlers (pg. ... Malcolm introduces the white man as being the “devil”in his letters, in which he means that the white-man’s high society is the reason why the black-man’s society was not functional and not articulate in the world in which they lived.
