In the stories we have read in class, all the characters have faced monsters. There was one major theme of all the works,” Facing Monsters.” There were also many external and internal conflicts between opposing characters. The three stories we read were, “ The Most Dangerous Game,” by Richard Connell,” A Sound of Thunder,” by Ray Bradbury, and “Black Boy,” by Richard Wright. Each story had a conflict in the beginning and at the end there was a resolution. All these stories compared and contrasted in many ways. In the story,” The Most Dangerous Game,” thee monster was General Zaroff. The characters were Rainsford, Whitney, Ivan, and General Zaroff. Rainsford and Whitney, two known hunters were on a hunting trip around the area of the Amazon River. They were ready to sleep, and Rainsford heard guns being fired and so he awakens and he goes to check if anything is wrong. While doing this, he accidentally falls off the yacht. He ends up on a nearby island, called “Ship Trap Island” where there’s a bad reputation. Then after, Rainsford came upon lights and he spotted an enormous building. Inside he met Ivan and General Zaroff, two new faces. General Zaroff was a tall and vicious man. Rainsford told Zaroff that he had fallen off a yacht and he was very hungry. So the General and Rainsford ate and talked about hunting. A topic which both enjoyed. The General told him that he used to hunt tigers but then he stopped because they weren’t a challenging game anymore. So he’s invented a new game, which is HUMANS. When Rainsford heard this, he was terrified and wanted to leave the island immediately. Zaroff told Rainsford the method of hunting this game. First, he suggests the hunter that they go hunting and the opponent gets food and a hunting knife and they get a three hours start. While this happens, Zaroff follow with a pistol and if the opponent eludes Zaroff for three days, then they win, but if Zaroff finds the opponent then he wins.
