In the film About a Boy directed by Chris and Paul Weitz and produced by Universal Studios in 2002, there were many examples of symbolism which highlighted the main ideas of the film such as no man is an island and that no matter what we think we depend on others a lot for our happiness and reason for living. As well as highlighting the main issues of the film, the symbolism of common objects raised queries about our values of materialism and individualism. ... In scene 9 Will talks about the advantages of single mothers “Fabulous, sexy, gorgeous, single mums”, as he feeds the fish. The symbolism of the goldfish being a decoration and the fact that he is only concerned about the appearances of single mums portrays how women are merely an enrichment on his arm. ... In most cases in the film when Will is moaning about his meaningless life, the camera catches the goldfish in the tank in the same shot to portray this metaphorical representation of Will’s life being like a goldfish in a bowl . For example: in scene 56 when Markus comes to seek help about his mother’s crying Will just refuses to address the issue instead he goes on to moan about his pointless being. ... Will is wearing a dark pair of sunglasses when talking about his imaginary son to Suzie. ... When Will speaks genuinely he doesn’t wear the glasses an example is when he says “Oh god I was gonna have to tell her” as he removes them, when walking down the path in the park and talking about his inheritance of money from his father. ... Suzie arrives and has Will on about his imaginery son Ned. ... The symbolization of the sunglasses questions our values about materialism; it made me consider how much Will relies on his matearalistic objects to actually be able to live a sociable life. ... The set of trainers that Will bought Markus to make “ an unhappy boy temporarily happy”- scene 36, symbolized how materialistic things and money are not the solution to deep sorrow. ... For example, after Markus comes home from school in scene 54 he finds his mum in the middle of the couch in tears, he realizes she is terribly unhappy and wants to do something about it. ... That day after school, however, Markus goes around to Will’s place to seek advice about his mum’s latest crying episodes: “ It’s as bad now as it was before the duck day”.
