The Vietnam War began as the guerilla fighters of North Vietnam (the Vietcong) attempted to take over the government of South Vietnam. This effort by the Vietcong eventually turned into a full length war. North Vietnam wanted to take over South Vietnams government in order to make South Vietnam a communist country. The United States and many other countries supported South Vietnam with weapons and troops. The USSR and the Republic of China supplied weapons and ammunition to North Vietnam and the Vietcong. While the United States was more powerful than North Vietnam, North Vietnams strategies and resolve were more effective and eventually allowed them to win the war.
