Escheria coli is a Gram negative bacteria and is classified in the Enterobacteriaceae family (1). Using nutritional requirements of E. coli can be helpful in the identification process, due to its ability to grow on MM1. E. coli can be found having a mutualistic effect as part of the normal flora in the intestines of humans. It synthesizes Vitamin K making it available for use by the humans (1). However, when it is introduced to environments of the body that are not benefited by its presence it is seen as an opportunistic pathogen. For example, if it colonizes in the urinary tract, you could develop a urinary tract infection (3).
