The Effect of Database Use on Individual Privacy There have been Concerns expressed about the effect the use of computer databases has had on individuals privacy. In Denmark, each citizen is issued with a PIN number, enabling the relevant information about that citizen; this can be seen in as an unnecessary infringement on people’s private life. An American police officer commented recently that "we have the technology if we wish to use it to find out exactly what you are doing at any time of day or night. We can listen to you, we can look at you, we can listen to your phone, we can watch your money move from account to account. You have no privacy so what's the point in going on about a right to privacy?" This show that the use of databases can be used in ways that many people would not like and disproportionate to the benefits that they bring. The police may want to have access to health records, as they may be important in solving crimes that involve the use of DNA, for example rape.
