The Nature-Nurture Issue is the old convenient term used to refer to the debate over the relative importance of heredity, and environmental influences in human development. Scientist considers such things as the natural human ability to walk as an animal instinct, or a natural skill that they were born with, making it part of the nature side. Such things like how an enriched environment, lots of experience, and learning can cause better brain development are nurture because it has been influenced by outer variables.
The use of this old nature-nurture term has been traced back as far as 13th century France from the manuscript, Silence by Heldriss of Cornwall. ... ” (Philip Groff, 1)
Within the story Nature and Nurture each play as characters as allegorical personifications of the influence of heredity and environment. ... In the story she is nurtured by all of her guardians to be a man, but nature tries to urge her into doing feminine activities like sewing:
“She wanted to go and learn to sew,
just as Nature demanded of her;
she should not cultivate such savage ways
for fief or inheritance. ... " (2583-2586)
But then Nurture arrives on the scene and banishes Nature:
"Nature, leave my nursling alone,
or I will put a curse on you!
