Alcohol misuse costs the Australian economy about $5 billion a year and accounts for one quarter of the total cost of drug abuse. A report prepared for the Federal and State Ministerial Council on Drug Strategy quoted the economic cost of alcohol misuse was estimated in 1996 at $4.7 billion a year. These costs includes premature deaths, treatment costs, loss of productivity and the adoption of various law enforcement and awareness strategies including uses of responsible marketing tools for all age groups and maintaining random breath testing- measures which the Australian government have initiated to cut the death toll among pedestrians.
