Victims of Misogyny People do not like to be disturbed, but ignoring violence and rape is not tolerable. In the short story “Where are you going, where have you been?” Joyce Oates tries to address the issue of rape and murder. The story emphasizes the idea that women are properties of men and they can be treated in a way men like. It also echoes the realization that in a predominantly patriarchal and misogynous society rape and murder are inevitable. Connie’s unreal world and Arnold Friend’s belongings, behavior and language fuse together and represent the truth about the real world. The figurative interpretations of Connie’s behavior, private thoughts, and dreams provide wonderful reasons for men to treat women as beautiful little “dolls” or “objects”. In the beginning of the story, Connie is a shallow, self-centered adolescent who “knew she was pretty and that was everything”. Connie lives in a fantasy world.
