Although not a surfer himself, Reg Mombassa, a key designer for the clothing company ‘mambo’, contributed the artwork.
‘heaven and hell’
The piece, a coloured pencil and charcoal work, done with a distinctly Mombassa style, the roughly drawn caricatures and brightly coloured backgrounds. It features the large basic shape of a house, dotted inside with Mombassa’s own impression of afterlives. ... Mombassa, avoids the predictable regularity to make his works effective and disturbing, often with a touch of anarchy.
It is quite a disputed subject as to whether or not Mombassa is a christian himself, when you consider the topic for many of his artworks, but he write
“I’m not a practising christian, but would consider Jesus to be one of the important and influential philosophers and historical figures”
This is obvious by his other artworks, especially his ‘australian jesus’ which appears in many of his works. Influenced also by music, comic books, and his family Mombassa has kept his own quirky style to put him down as one of Australian’s best known and loved artists
Gerry Wedd, another artist for the Mambo clothing label, contributed numerous pieces for the exhibition.
