Talcott Parsons himself suggested that within the modern nuclear family it was essential that one parent, the father, performed the instrumental role of leader and provider while the other, the mother, performed the expressive role of giving psychological support and for socialising the children. ... They also see the traditional nuclear family as the ideal family type to perform this function, however it is clear that in today’s society there are only 14% of family households that are nuclear as more divorces occur (mainly instigated by women) and families are diverse and different within every household. ...
