Stratification, Stigma and Privilege Framework Essay Two states that “one privilege of being White is being able to be oblivious of those privileges (178).” But is being oblivious, or as I see it naivety, a privilege or a hindrance? The reason I raise this question is what system is keeping the “Whites” naïve to their positions of privilege and power. ... Of course I am not addressing stigma but merely trying to point out that being White, and male, is not as invisible as one would think. ... This is a prejudice and stigma attached to and against White men. The stigma and prejudice are one in the same; this is the assumption that all White men are oppressors. ... In the article by Dorothy Alison there are strong illustrations of social stratification along economic lines. ... This is where I believe, as I stated before, the theory of White privilege falls apart. ... This is where I believe the social stratification and “White Privilege” comes into play. The White men who control most of the wealth of America have a vested interest in keeping their power and privilege intact.
