Adolescence is a time of learning, described as, “The period of physical and psychological development from the onset of puberty to maturity,” in Webster’s Dictionary. In the novel, Bless Me, Ultima, by Rudolfo Anaya, the main character, Antonio, is going through adolescence. During this time he experiences growth or development when he encounters several belief systems, sees people killed, and through Ultima’s guidance. Religion is a large part of billions of people’s lives, including Antonio. Tony has a problem grasping the truth once he is exposed to several different religions beyond Catholicism. “The golden carp,’ I said to myself, ‘a new god?’ I could not believe this strange story, and yet I could not disbelieve Samuel.” (81) Throughout Tony’s life, up to this point, there has been only one god, and that is the god of the Catholics. When the idea of a new god is imposed on him, Tony has a hard time sorting out his thoughts. All of his life his mother has instilled in him that there is only one god, however his friends in school conclude otherwise.
