There are many distinct and different causes for eating disorders among
adolescents. The media, mental conflicts, their upbringing, as well as
outside pressures to do well, all contribute to an eating disorder.
Society pressures individuals to achieve greatly and work to be their
best, these pressures result in an overload of stress, causing one to
maybe turn to an eating disorder so they will not only be the best they
can be, but also they can look good as well. Two of the three most common eating disorders are anorexia nervosa and bulimia nervosa and can be classified as mental illnesses (Immell, 10). Eating disorders inclode a range of conditions that “involve an obsession with food, eight and appearance to the degree that a person’s health, relationships and daily activities are adversely affected” (Immell 9). ... Eating no longer becomes a pleasurable experience,
but rather a painful experience to even contemplate.
Most adolescents with eating disorders tend to share certain personality traits including low self-esteem, feeling of helplessness, and a fear of becoming fat. ... Adolescents are then
pressured by a societal model or thinness leading them to dieting which
usually leads to an eating disorder. ... Another message displayed by the media
is that eating is a pleasurable activity which meets any needs, in
addition to relieving hunger. ...
Anorexia then becomes their life and they slowly forget about school and
their studies and begin to focus completely on starving themselves to be
‘perfect’ and are then forced to be hospitalized due to the fact that the
eating disorder has been completely ignored as well as shunned by those
surrounding them.
