FACTORS IN ORGANISATIONAL ANALYSIS
Twenty first century organisations are characterised by the increasing global competition. ... This essay analyses the relationship between the organisational elements, which are organisational theory, organisational design and change, and organisational structure and culture, explaining how they function and impact an organisational performance in order to achieve the organisation’s goals. It also discusses the benefits of the implementation of both organisational learning and knowledge management in terms of contributing an organisation’s ability to deal with contingencies, obtaining a competitive advantage, managing diversity effectively and stimulating innovations.
The relationships between organisational theory and organisational elements (which are organisational design and change, and organisational structure and culture) are discussed. ... 12-14) that organisational design and change play a significant role in creating the organisational capability to deal with contingencies, obtaining competitive advantage, managing diversity and elevating efficiency innovation. Organisational design and change are the significant factors which process and manage the dimensions and components of organisational culture and structure. Organisational design and change control the potential activities regarding the achievement of goals, which involve the transformation of the organisation to be adaptive to the global environment by redesigning its structure and culture. Samson and Daft (2003) define the meaning of organisational change as the adoption of a new idea or behaviour by an organisation.
Organisational structure is the formal system of tasks and the set of relative authority used to control the compliance of people within the organisation, including controlling how its resources are used. Also, organisational structure is a response to contingencies involving the environment, technology and human resources. Organisational culture is the set of shared values and norms among an organisation’s members which are used to control the interaction with people both inside and outside the organisation and it is affected by people, ethics and organisational structure. However, the functions of organisational structure and organisational culture are similar. For example, these factors can be managed through the procedure of organisational design and the organisation can use them to control and form organisational behaviour. ... The function of organisational theory is to study how the organisation impacts and is impacted by the environment in its operation (Jones 2003, p.8), and organisational theory is related to all the factors of organisational elements in terms of operating and controlling its business effectively.
In order to establish an organisation’s ability to handle contingencies, organisational design and its structure need to be flexible and adaptive to deal with the global environmental complexity that is becoming increasingly important.
