Taking Care of Relationships
The theme in Joy Williams’ short story, "Taking Care," illustrates that we should periodically evaluate our relationships and not take any of them for granted. ... After his wife is taken ill and admitted to a hospital, it becomes necessary for Jones to take care of everything by himself. During this lonely time he is able to examine his life and he is forced to acknowledge the truth about his relationships with his daughter, his wife, and God. ... Jones appears to love his wife care deeply about her health, but there is a moment in the story that this love is not so obvious. ... It seems also that Jones recognizes a problem, but he still does not care. ... He has used this time to reflect on his unsuccessful relationships and will now work to try and make them better. He commences on this journey to mend his relationships by making everything perfect for his wife’s return home. ...
Williams’ shows us that there are struggles and trials in relationships.
