In today’s society we are constantly reminded of the danger involved in drinking alcohol, while at the same time beer drinking among college students has become normal on most campuses. Given the advertising campaigns of modern beer producers and the attractive picture of drinking in college, drinking is almost expected of American students. ... The praise of beer as society’s drink of choice is not an occurrence of recent times. In the eighteenth century etchings entitled Gin Lane and Beer Street, English satirist William Hogarth attempted to show the virtue of drinking beer in comparison to the evils involved with gin. Hogarth created these etchings as companion pieces to show his views on alcohol at the time, which show misfortune and gin drinking in Gin Lane and happiness and prosperity in Beer Street.
