I truly believe that Florence Nightingale said it best when she described nursing as “a calling”. I do not think that nurses choose the profession; rather I think the profession chooses them. The need to care for others and the desire to make a difference is something that all nurses share. Understanding the relationship between person, their environment and health defines caring. However, to care effectively we must keep many things in mind. Within the four concepts of nursing are many sub-concepts. Nurses cannot practice successfully without closely examining these sub-concepts. In addition, nurses must always be mindful of their own values and beliefs which will undoubtedly guide their practice. The nurse must always be aware of any conflicts he or she may have and recognize when to seek assistance to avoid ethical and moral dilemmas.
