Hence, the choices of the characters portrayed in “A Doll House” are largely shaped by the statuses and roles imposed upon them, not by their desires. ... It is possible that her character can be understood in terms of the choices she made – in the context of the choices given or withheld by the society she lived in, and the choices made or avoided by her. ... Indoctrinated by what society expected of her, the position she believed was her place was one that was inferior to her husband – his doll and plaything. ... If she was aware of these, then readers could possibly conclude that in the beginning she was truly a weak-willed woman, who could only submit to what the social order expected of her without making her own choices, and clung to the illusion that her husband was strong and would always protect her. ... In this, she would have been both submitting to society and making her own choices. ... It can be successfully concluded that Nora could be understood in the context of what choices she made, as her decision-making led to her accomplishment of understanding herself and her place, and her strength to turn her back on her trapped life.
