Is Personhood an essential criterion of whether abortion is legitimate or not?
Abortion is the termination of a pregnancy before birth. ... Abortion is an extremely controversial subject as it raises the question of morality of terminating a pre-natal human life in response to the desire of others, who would be inadvertently affected by the birth.
There are two opposing opinions in the great debate of abortion. ... The first side referred to as pro-choice hold the basic beliefs that women should have unrestricted rights to abortion, especially before the foetus is viable (sixth month of pregnancy). They believe abortion represents a women・s right to say no to motherhood and that ethically and morally it・s a women・s basic right to make decisions about her own life. ... Pro-life campaigners believe that abortion is unjustifiable killing of an unborn child, and the ultimate social injustice. ... This raises many questions concerning the concept of personhood.
The main question of personhood I will be discussing is that at what stage can an unborn child be considered a person and therefore have the human right to life, consequently eliminating the concept of abortion. In my research I found an enormous amount of information with differing viewpoints on the criteria of .personhood・. Firstly, I・ll present the certain criteria of personhood I agree with that purports to characteristically justify a human being as a person. The following set of central traits of a person comes from a biomedical ethics paper written by Mary Anne Warren titled On the Moral and Legal Status of Abortion.
