Erika Cabrera Zoot Suit Riots http://www.mkhs.org/MKHSWebsite/Information/Projects/student.projects/zoot/zuit.html . The history of the Zoot suit Riots is about the racism we had in the 1940's. How did this whole thing started. Well it started by Chicanos dressing in a different way. They called it the Zoot Suits. In June 1943 Mexican Americans in L.A. became victims of mob violence. For several nights young Mexican Americans were attacked and beaten by hundreds of white sailors desirous of meting out "VENGANGE" for a fistfight that had occurred between some navy men and local chicano youths. Los Angeles Police did not interfere and no sailors were arrested. The young Mexican Americans, called pachucos, were publicized at the time as reckless gangs, but they are currently remembered more as defenders of their neighborhoods, families, and racial pride. What caused it. Sailors were very jealous of people who were here at home. They basically went after the one's who were dressed in the zootsiut. When the sailors would come home they would go to the bars and drink get drunk and go and find some zootsuiters. They would hire some cabs to go through the streets to find the zootsuiters. The sailors would beat them and sometimes stripped them down leaving them naked and bleeding in the middle of the street. The police would arrest the one's who were wearing the zootsuit. http://www.digitalhistory.uh.edu/mexican_voices/voices_display.cfm?id=104 Mexican American Voices Title The Zoot Suit Riots Author Governor's Citizen's Committee Report on Los Angeles Riots Annotation At the end of the three-month Sleepy Lagoon trial, a public campaign against Mexican American youth intensified.
