Rose for Emily A Perspective
The short story “A Rose for Emily” by William Faulkner is about the life of Emily Grierson, an aging spinster, who according to Faulkner is, “the poor woman who had had no life at all. ... ” As is made patently clear Emily Grierson’s world was comprised of a series of telling psychological issues that on the whole shape her mindset and energizes her actions. Repressed by domineering and dominating father, Emily’s growing deep-seeded fears send her into a state of isolation. Emily’s isolation began at a very young age. ... Miss Emily’s father forbids her to date socially, or at least the community thinks so: “None of the young men were quite good enough for Miss Emily and such. ... As Faulkner wrote: Miss Emily met them at the door, dressed as usual and with no trace of grief on her face. ... After her father dies, Miss Emily finds herself hard pressed to cope with the reality of his death; however, her strength and purpose, her aloofness from the truth and her resilient pride does somewhat lessen the horror and repulsion of her actions.
