history of Petra
After having been to the city of Petra in the present day, I could only try and imagine why a society of people would decide to build a city in what seemed the middle of nowhere. This paper will not discuss the modern day discoveries of the city, but give a history of the city prior to it becoming “lost”. The remains of Petra is located in the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan about 4 hours south of modern day Amman, about 2 hours north of Aqaba, on the edges of the mountainous desert of the Wadi Arabah. ... Through the use of the natural rock formations the Nabateans were able to drive back attacks made by Antigonus I Monophtalmus (a general of Alexander the Great), Potolemaic Egypt, and Seleucid Syria against Petra. Petra was invaded by the cultural ideas of its caravans. ... The entire Nabatean empire was based upon trade and it was only just that the religions of the era that reflected the build up of wealth and trade were flourished in Petra.
