Introduction of plate tectonics The ground below us is always moving at faster than the earth is rotating #, with a mass density about 13x that of water. The mass of Earths core is One hundred million million tons, which is about thirty percent greater than the moon#. The ground we stand on is actually floating on this molten rock. What we are standing on is called tectonic plates. There are approximately seven large tectonic plates and a number of smaller ones. Tectonic Plate Map  When two oceanic plates collide, one is forced beneath the other and island arcs are created. On the other hand when the two colliding masses are continental, neither has been known to sub-duct. In these cases a massive crumpling of the crust occurs, resulting in very impressive mountain ranges such as the Himalayans.# This is the mountains I’m going to be talking about. The Himalayans The Himalayans, using state-of-the-art technology Professor Brad Washburn of the Boston Museum of Science, the world's foremost mountain cartographer, has calculated that earth's highest elevation is actually 7 feet higher than the previous record.# That makes the official height 29,035 ft/8850m.# Mountains aren't just big piles of dirt, they're made of solid rock.
