Upon agreeing to become a lifeguard and water safety instructor for the city of Houston, I never imagined I'd also be taking on the duty of babysitter. I arrived every morning between the hours of eight and nine to prepare for the individual swimming lessons I taught before the pool would open to the public at noon. Because it was a public pool, the cost was a measly seventy-five cents a day. Most parents found this an affordable alternative to daycare. Therefore, regardless of what time I clocked in, I was always greeted by a line of children whose parents had dropped them off on their way to work so they could wait patiently for noon to roll around. Bobby, a regular patron of the pool, was all of eleven years old and thought the weight of the world was on his shoulders. He didn't care who you were or what you did; he was the boss. No manners, patience, or even the slightest hint of niceness was in this child.
