Love Medicine by Louise Erdrich presents characters that exhibit distinct personality traits and live their lives to suit their individual personal desires. Identity crisis is an evident theme in almost every novel and within Love Medicine the characters struggle to find out who they are and what they stand for. One character in particular, Marie Kashpaw, is one who knows what she stands for in her self-identity. On the other hand, Lulu Nanapush is struggling in a sense that she lacks identity and truly has no direction as where to find herself as a whole. ... Although this plan eventually backfired it was a strong representation of how Marie seemed to be the only stable female character in her identity. ...
As Marie is the ambitious and stable character who is fairly sure of her identity, Lulu Nanapush is the complete opposite.
