Though I’m not sure I completely understood exactly what Alice McDermott was trying to get across in “Enough,” I did actually like the story. Maybe I liked it because I think striving for pleasure is something that most humans do, whether they realize it or not. Or maybe I liked it because, if all truth be told, everyone likes stories and movies with a little sex in them. I also liked how I found slight humor in the story, like when the son was calculating how old his parents were when he heard them having sex and was surprised that they were still doing this when they were nearly fifty years old. I could not help but feel bad for her at the end when she was ninety years old and no longer got to enjoy those pleasures. At first I thought that maybe she was kind of selfish, like she neglected her family’s needs and feelings just to get pleasure. But when I looked further into it, I saw that she really did love her family very much.
