How can I encapsulate all of who I am within the confines of a few pages? To have to summarize years of experience, circumstances, and situations that I have encountered is rather challenging, if not down right implausible. Do I begin with the fact that I was born in Jamaica? Or perhaps I could elaborate on the fact that my parents only made it to the 7th grade? I could just state that I am the 4th child of 7 children, not including the 2 children my father had before marrying my mother. I am also the first one to have completed a U.S. college program. I think perhaps I will simply start with the statement, “I am not supposed to be at this level in life.” Growing up in Riviera Beach, FL during a time when the FBI ranked the city number one for murder per capita, I never gave in to the pressures around me. While many of my peers sold or used drugs, I managed to stay away from it all. I quickly escaped into the military because I had no other examples of what I could become. There were no doctors, attorneys, engineers or other professionals around that could speak into my life. I didn’t know what I would do but I did know I was destined for more. After all, I did serve as Vice President of my sophomore class, junior class, and SGA while playing football, running track, playing in the band, and working a part time job. While in the Army, I found myself juggling many tasks once again. While serving as a power generation equipment mechanic, I managed to earn a spot on the all-army football and softball teams in Germany. I also played on the Commander’s Cup basketball team.
